I suggest looking for hotels on a hotel reservation website. It will give you a selection based on your price range. Not many hotels will have transfers to the port but if you get a hotel near the airport you will be able to get transfers to the airport. The airport is about 10 min from the port by taxi.

can we upgrade?

A lot of people like to upgrade once they have booked a cabin. Check for available staterooms and their price on NCL's website. That should give you an idea on how much it will cost to upgrade.
Since you already have a reservation, you will need to contact NCL or your travel agent to make the reservation changes.

I was told the dress code is resort casual. Levis that are not worn out and with holes are acceptable along with a colared shirt.. Closed toe shoes are mandatory in the eating areas.

We have done the LA-Miami trip and enjoyed the whole thing. We ate in one of the main free restaurants every night, we tried to share each night and got good company most of the time. We never "dressed up" in a formal way but were always neatly dressed. You will feel really welcome if you are neatly dressed.

There are no formal nights on Norwegian ships. There is a dress up or not night if you choose, it will be posted in your daily paper that you receive the night before.

I read somewhere on the site that there is one night that is a dress up or not night. You are not required to dress up, as long as you are in resort casual clothing.

We haven't found "Formal Dress Up" nights on Norwegian. Most people just dress neatly. Some groups did have a more formal attire but it was their choice.

No mandatory formal nights but there are 1 or 2 "Formal or Not" evenings where it's optional to dress up if you want to and photographers are located usually in the Atrium for portrait photos.

Yes, the amenities in the ship's stateroom are similar to a hotel. Mini-fridge/bar, phone, TV, coffee maker (not in inside & ocean view staterooms), ice bucket, beach towels, mini-safe, hair dryer, liquid soap and shampoo.

Refer to the following for more info on suite amenities.
